My client approached me in June 2018 as he had been experiencing lower back pain for number of years.
He was a CEO of a successful IT company and travelled a lot. As a kid though, he represented his state in Shot Put and won medals.
I coached him around reducing that back pain by correcting his posture and movement for about 8 months when I popped the question " Do you want to have a go at Shot Put again"? to which he said " Are you serious"?
Long story short, we went to AUT Performance centre and booked the shot put court for us.
Now, I am not a shot put coach - I can't even throw that far, I mean that's 7.26kgs but what I do understand is human body and how my client moves.
So I told him that I can't teach him shot put but try my best to reignite his muscle memory around his sport almost 30 years later.
We enrolled in 2019 NZ Masters Shot Put which took place in Timaru, Canterbury that year.
We didn't go for a win but wanted to get to 8 metres as we couldn't get that done in our practice.
The universe was kind to us and he clocked 8.43m on his sixth and final throw and we ended up winning a Silver Medal.
That my friend is the difference between training and coaching.
