Tré Seals describes his MARTIN typeface as “nonviolent”, but gives no description as to what that means. In the world of type, “non-violent” isn’t a descriptor used by anyone else.

I want to explore the history of digital type and explore what “violent” type is, how language has had to adapt and change with the shift to digital, how typographers have fought censorship worldwide, and how colonial expansion has affected typographers from countries which don’t rely on a Latin alphabet. Throughout, you'll find examples of fonts with cultural significance, and fonts created by designers who intend to educate, peacekeep, recontextualise, and decolonialise their environments.
