Imposter Syndrome is a Bit**

🤐🔇🔕😖

Have you ever felt that you are not good enough, haven't earned your accomplishments, have lack of trust and confidence in yourself or have moments where you start doubting your capabilities despite a proven track record ?

Well, you are not alone! Even Albert Einstein experienced something similar!

This is why he referred to him as an "Involuntary Swindler".  He believed his work did not deserve as much recognition and attention as it has received.

So by definition, imposter syndrome is when a person doubts their abilities, has a persistent fear of failure or being exposed as a fraud, yes as a fraud.

What is it?
"Impostor syndrome (IS) refers to an internal experience of believing that you are not as competent as others perceive you to be. While this definition is usually narrowly applied to intelligence and achievement, it has links to perfectionism and the social context."

  • Imposter Syndrome
  • Imposter Phenomena
  • Imposter Experience
  • Pluralistic Ignorance

However, it's more to do with an individual's personal traits and certain phycological patterns that often get reflected in many ways.

I am my own biggest critic. Before anyone else has criticized me, I have already criticized myself.

I listed some characteristics of someone experiencing Imposter Syndrome. While there are many, during the session we primarily focused on "self-doubt" as this is highlighted as the biggest contributing factor of Imposter Syndrome in those working in tech.

Characteristics:
  • Self Doubt
  • Doubting and Criticizing Own Performance
  • Constantly Comparing Yourself
  • Perfectionism
  • Fear of Failure
  • Feeling like a fraud (undeserving or not capable)

We also highlighted that Imposter syndrome is very common when you are trying something new or when you enter a new environment; we had grown 🚀 4x in 2020.

Causes:
  • New Environments or Challenges
  • Personality Traits
  • Cultural Expectations
  • Family and Team Dynamics

How to overcome?
  • Self-Awareness
  • Promote Recognition
    • Celebrate Achievements
    • Express Gratitude
    • Affirm Confidence

Recognition is an easy and quick way to reinforce confidence in yourself or on others! And there is absolutely no reason why someone cannot do this for themselves.

Appreciate what you already have and what you have achieved, and believe in yourself. If you are working on something difficult, keep reminding yourself that you are capable.
