The Pleasure Principle was revolutionary when it was released in 1979. It pushed the boundaries of electronic music into the Pop scene, and its influence can be heard in the music of so many artists. It is truly inspiring to think of the impact it has had, even after listening to it for the first time.
What started as a track-by-track review snowballed into a full essay. I review my listening process and how I approached two major listening sessions. Next, I provided a context for Gary Numan’s musical style (primarily comprising of research into the historical context surrounding the album's creation and release). It also features a brief discussion about my thoughts on Numan’s sound design. I then analyzed each track in order as they appeared on the original album release. I noted my positive and negative observations, as well as my interpretation of the lyrics where applicable. Finally, I shared my thoughts and research regarding the impact of this album on other musical artists.
Completing this work has put me on a path back into music and academia. I've started researching deeper into the history of electronic music. In doing so, I feel I am on my way to finding my calling - teaching others about the fascinating people and stories behind so many great songs. I hope to share my journey as I piece together my ideas for a course.
