👨🏻Gender Expectations👨🏻

I’ve been told to “man-up” on many occasions by my parents, friends and even teachers while growing up. I was told that singing and dancing are “girly” activities back in secondary school. I was laughed at because I was more artistic than my peers. I was “trained” in a way not to showcase too much of my emotions and to “be strong”.

Society has tons of heavy expectations for men. It often starts from the expectations that parents have for sons to carry on the bloodline, to be providers rather than caregivers. Men are also expected to be financially successful, ambitious, and tough. What happens if you don't live up to those expectations?

I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to get to speak at Calm Collective Asia #ifeelyoubro series - a men’s circle with Egan Hwan, Vaibhav Toshniwal from Mantor & Joshua Simon, sharing our personal journey growing up, how we’ve dealt with not meeting expectations of the 'ideal man', and how Vulnerability is indeed powerful.
